Putnam Exam

Do you like solving puzzles?

Are you up for a mathematical challenge?

Intrigued by the idea of cash prizes?

You've come to the right place!

The William Lowell Putnam Competition (details below) is a national mathematics competition for undergraduates. The problems are designed to be accessible to students with a "basic knowledge of college mathematics". Basically, that means that you will be able to understand what each question is asking. Solving them, on the other hand, requires you to be clever!

Common topics include calculus, probability, group theory, set theory, graph theory, lattice theory, geometry, number theory, and cardinal arithmetic.

In order to prepare for the exam, the Bates Putnam Team meets weekly to discuss selected problems or to focus in depth on selected topics (such as those listed above). Every day, we will become a little cleverer!

Interested in meeting with us? Send me an email or stop by my office. (Contact info is at the top of the page.)

Putnam Team meetings

We are meeting on Thursdays at 8pm in the math lounge (Hathorn 209). Contact me (cshor -at- bates) or Professor Haines (dhaines -at- bates) with any questions.

Exam details

The exam is held every year on the first Saturday in December. This year, that is December 1. The exam consists of 12 questions, 6 of which are done in the morning session (10am-1pm) and 6 of which are done in the afternoon session (3pm-6pm).
