Trento, Italy

Our longest stop was Trento, Italy for Meredith's math conference. We stayed for almost a week in this small, quiet town in the Italian alps. Unlike our other destinations it gets few tourists, so we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves without feeling compelled to "see the sights". However, Trento is a beautiful city. Its claim to fame is the Council of Trent, a meeting of the Catholic bishops between 1545 and 1563 to decide how to respond to the Protestant movement. (Their response: "Screw the Protestants!") Just like when a city is chosen to host the Olympics, Trento did lots to improve and beautify the town. During our stay, we enjoyed walking around the old town, eating great Italian meals, and drinking lots of Italian wine.

Not sure where in Trento this is, but it's such a cute picture. Feel free to photoshop a more interesting background if you like.

This is why elevators should not have mirrors in them.

The monument on the hill is a memorial to the Italian patriot, Cesare Battisti, who was executed by Austrians in this very castle.

If you want to let the visiting cardinals know where you stand on the whole catholic/protestant thing, there's nothing like a fresco of Charlemagne to make your point.

The castle courtyard had nice gardens.

This is what you get when you order egg on your pizza. It was delicious! (Using advanced special effects, this photo shows just how dinner would look after 3 liters of wine.)

We went on a tour of a vineyard. Drinking wine in the fields really intimidates next year's crop.

We were in Trento during their weeklong summer festival, which involved parades of people in medieval garb.

Like at any festival, all of the weirdos come out of the woodwork.

The parade honored local trades and guilds. This horse-drawn float brought its own blacksmiths in the medieval version of carrying a spare tire.

This handsome creature was the finale of the parade. Santa really doesn't look at all the same during the summer.

Further evidence that Trento was on the Catholic side of the disagreements.

Brian has a sixth sense for relaxation. Why can't all park benches be designed like this?
