SUGGESTED CHEMISTRY LABS FOR GRADES 7 & 8
(June 21, 2005 version)

GENERAL NOTES:

All labs can fit in a single class period unless otherwise indicated.
Some labs are similar to those described in Seager & Slambaugh, Safety-scale Laboratory Experiments for Chemistry for Today, 5th ed. (Thomson Brooks/Cole). See also SY02-101.chy

Lab 7D, weeks 7-9: Measurement of length, mass, density, volume, temperature (to be coordinated with physics) (S&S exp.1-3)
Weeks 10-16: NO LABS. Maybe computer models of atomic structure?
Lab 7E, weeks 17-22: One or two single periods: Separating mixtures by various means: decanting, filtering, boiling, magnetic separation, chromatography (S&S exp.5). Possible mixtures: water/salt, iron/sulfur, salt/sand/sulfur; chromatography of various commercial inks, markers, food dyes
Lab 7F, weeks 23-25: Properties of some binary compounds (first year NH3 only; add SO2 & H2S in future years because of need for hood)
Weeks 27-34: CALCULATING SESSIONS on molecular weights, percent composition, empirical formulas

GRADE 8:

Lab 8A, weeks 4-5: Examples of chemical reactions (S&S 4,6,7; some could be teacher demonstrations)
Lab 8B, weeks 6-8: Generating hydrogen (acid + zinc or other metal)
Lab 8C, weeks 9-17 (double period): Generate and measure oxygen Other stoichiometric labs (S&S exp. 6,7)
Weeks 18-19 (field trip): Possible field trip to Saugus Iron Works (coordinate with History), or possibly reduction of copper ore outdoors (or similar metallurgy)
Lab 8D, weeks 20-24: Gas laws (Boyle's, others; S&S exp. 8)
Labs 8E-8F, weeks 25-26, various possibilities: Generating CO2 Electrolysis of water (?) Double period: Calculating water of hydration by weight Precipitation reactions and solubilities (S&S exp. 9)_
Lab 8G, weeks 27-28 (all morning): Purifying water by distillation. Impurities can include cornstarch, sugar, salt, methylene blue. A distillation apparatus may be set up in a central, public place to run (with supervision) throughout the morning or all day. During their next lab period, students can test both the initial impure solution and the distillate.
Lab 8H, weeks 29-end: Calculating and making up solutions: mixing solids to get desired molarity; dilution problems (vol x conc). (Some can be checked with a spectrophotometer)

NOTES ON LABORATORY EXERCISES:

Chemistry and Biology will have double periods scheduled once a week to permit two-period labs in each subject, as needed.
All labs are tentative and subject to change.

OTHER POSSIBLE LABS, including FUTURE YEARS:

Simple combination and separation reactions (?)

Reactions like starch + iodine (color changes), acids and carbonates (bubbling), precipitation of BaSO₄ or AgCl.

Distillation of water. Impurities to include cornstarch, sugar, salt, methylene blue. A distillation apparatus may be set up in a central, public place to run (with supervision) throughout the morning or all day. During their next lab period, students can test both the initial impure solution and the distillate.

Measurement of melting points and boiling points.

Electroplating of copper (?)

Generating oxygen; properties of oxygen.

Gas laws

Water & dilute acids (HCl, sulfuric, vinegar) tested with the following: salt, baking soda, limestone, iron, aluminum, sulfur.

Rates of reactions

Properties of metals

Reduction of a metal (bronze, copper, tin) from its ore

Precipitation reactions

Freezing point depression

Calorimetry, specific heat

Heat of fusion of ice

Serial dilutions; spectrophotometry if possible

Testing for selected ions: NH₄, S, SO₄, Cl, etc.
