Describing physical properties of various substances (S&S exp.4)

Hardware: Copper, Iron (nails) Aluminum, Zinc, Wood
Grocery: Salt, Baking soda, Vinegar, Isopropyl alcohol, Cornstarch, Juices, Paraffin, Plastic spoons
Miscellaneous: Rock samples, Paper, Cardboard, Ice
Lab 7C, weeks 5-6:
Evidence of chemical reactions (see chemistry online outline)
   
Lab 7D, weeks 7-9:
Measurement of length, mass, density, volume, temperature (to be coordinated with physics) (S&S exp.1-3)
   
Weeks 10-16: NO LABS. Maybe computer models of atomic structure?    
Lab 7E, weeks 17-22: One or two single periods:
  • Separating mixtures by various means: decanting, filtering, boiling, magnetic separation, chromatography (S&S exp.5).
  • Possible mixtures: water/salt, iron/sulfur, salt/sand/sulfur; chromatography of various commercial inks, markers, food dyes
   
Lab 7F, weeks 23-25: Properties of some binary compounds (first year NH3 only; add SO2 & H2S in future years because of need for hood)    
Weeks 27-34: CALCULATING SESSIONS on molecular weights, percent composition, empirical formulas    


GRADE 8: Suggestions are welcome on all the above.

NOTES ON LABORATORY EXERCISES:

Chemistry and Biology will have double periods scheduled once a week to permit two-period labs in each subject, as needed.
All labs are tentative and subject to change.
