Weeks 9-11. Reaction rates. Equilibria. Gases in equilibrium. Equlibrium solutions. Buffers and pH equilibria. LeChatelier's principle. Non-equilibrium conditions. (Chapter 18)   REVIEW.   QUIZ Buffers and pH
Weeks 12-16. Thermochemistry. (Chapter 17)   REVIEW.   FULL-PERIOD TEST ? Determining specific heat; heat of fusion.

Week 21-22. Systematic chemistry: silicon, germanium, and their compounds. Silicate minerals and crystallography (briefly). (Appendix A, R18-23) QUIZ

Week 27-29. Nuclear chemistry: radioactive decay, rates of decay, radioactive dating, radioactive tracers, balancing nuclear equations, decay series, applications (incl. nuclear medicine, smoke detectors, etc.), chain reactions (uncontrolled in weapons, controlled in power plants), thermonuclear reactions and energy in the sun and other stars. Week 30-31. Environmental chemistry, toxicology. Pollution and its remediation.
Week 32,33 Carbon and its compounds. Introduction to organic chemistry. (Chapters 22, 23)   REVIEW.
