In response to the query from Lorraine Finch and Avril Henry about methods
for making images of watermarks...
A lot of how-to-do-it information is posted on the World Wide web at the
Archive of Papers and Watermarks in Greek Manuscripts (which, in spite of
the specialized nature of that archive, is intended to serve a more general
reference service, as well:
http://www.bates.edu:80/Faculty/wmarchive/
You could look at the Guide to the Archive (or go to it directly at
http://www.bates.edu:80/Faculty/wmarchive/guide_contents.html
On that page you will see there is a section on how to make contact prints
of watermarks. Or you can go directly to it at
http://www.bates.edu:80/Faculty/wmarchive/Dylux_method.html
This is the method Rolf Dessauer was referring to in his comments.
You will also find answers to most (I think) of the other questions you
would have for your project.
