ExternalLink can only be used as part of another component. For example, here it appears as part of a LinkGroup:

The ExternalLink component allows you to create dynamic ICMS links to pages that are not in ICMS. The ExternalLink component doesn't do anything by itself; it acts as a subsititute or a proxy of an ICMS page. You would have to drag it into a LinkGroup component, Teaser component, or some other component for it to be seen by the user.
