LEWISTON - Dean of the College James Carignan is running for the Lewiston City Council.

"I've been interested in civic affairs for a long time," said Carignan, the former Dean of Students and a graduate of Bates. He is running unopposed for a nonpartisan seat in a special election.

Recent students know Carignan best for his work as Dean of the College, where he has arranged a variety of successful programs, lectures, and service learning projects over the years. He also teaches a first-year seminar, "Slavery in America."

Over the past week his blue and white posters have appeared around the campus, which lies within his potential district, announcing his candidacy.

"I think the city is in need of real leadership, and I would like to be a part of that leadership," Carignan told the Student on Wednesday night.

Lewiston City Council seats are part time positions, and Carignan plans to continue his work at Bates while serving on the Council.
