
Adelia has been the top finisher for Bates in all but her first
collegiate
competition. She led the team in qualifying for the 1995 NCAA National
Cross Country Championship and qualified as an individual in 1996 along
with teammate Abby Phelps. Adelia finished sixth at the 1996 New England
Qualifying meet. In Illinois at the NCAA Championship meet, Adelia
surprised
many with her 15th-place finish. She was the first finisher from New
England
and ran a personal best 18:17 on the 5K course, making her the third
woman
Bates cross country history to earn All-America honors.For the second
straight
year, Adelia earned All-State, All-NESCAC and All-New England honors.
Adelia
participates in track with personal bests of 2:22.37 for 800m, 4:44.27
for 1500m, and 10:33.8 for 3000m. She qualified and competed in the 1996
NCAA Indoor Track Championship in the 1500m. Majoring in Russian and
English,
Adelia maintains a 3.7 GPA and spent last short term studying in
Russia.
Abby's
performances improved steadily throughout the season, establishing her
as one of the top Division III runners in New England. She set a personal
record of 18:54 for 5K and earned All-NESCAC second team honors. Early
in the season she set her goal on a return trip to the NCAA Championship.
A strong ninth-place finish among the 240 runners at the qualifying meet
gave Abby the opportunity to once again compete at the NCAA Championship
meet, where she tied her 5K personal record and finished 56th of 184
runners.
A strong team leader, Abby is captain-elect of the 1997 squad. Abby helps
to coordinate a mentoring program pairing Bates student-athletes with
junior
high students. Abby will be competing in the 3000-, 5000- and 10000-meter
runs in track , with the goal of once again qualifying for Nationals. She
has personal bests in track of 19:11.57 for 5000m and 40:10.2 for
10,000m.| For
