Kate Burakowski '00
1997 State of Maine Champion, 1500-meters
Kate has completed in her first cross country season at
Bates. Also a veteran of the track team, Kate was a consistent top-five
finisher who had a season-best time of 19:10. A native of
Derry, N.H., and a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, she is one to amaze.
Famous to team members for her "kick" at the end of races, Kate never ceases
to give her competitors a good race. In track, she was the 1997 Indoor
State of Maine
Champion in the 1,500-meters as a first year.
A senior art major,
Kate spent her fall '98 semester at Mass Art. Kate returned to Bates with
increased focus and has continued her success. In 1999, Kate had a
personal best in the 1,500-meters (4:52.83) at the ECAC Indoor Championship,
and was a member of both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams. Kate earned All-New England
Division III honors for the 4 x 800 relay (9:51.02) running 2:23 for her
leg. Kate is involved with the Bates Outing Club, and is earning her
Teaching Certification from Bates.

Kate Kenoyer '00 - Whitefield,
Maine Academic All-NESCAC selection
Kate is a senior who ran cross country for the first
time in her career in 1999. She was a consistent top five performer
for the
team who had a season best performance of 19:13. Kate had played two years
of
varsity soccer for Bates before going abroad to Germany for her entire
junior year. An honors student, Kate is applying for a Fulbright Teaching
Award. Kate is a graduate of Cony High School and is majoring in German.

Tracy Lyford '00 - Portsmouth, N.H.
1999 Captain - Robert Plumb Award Winner
Tracy was abroad in the fall of 1998 but she was so respected by her
teammates for her past contributions that she was elected a captain for
the 1999 season. Tracy has far surpassed her high school cross country
performances in college. Primarily a 600m runner and 400 hurdler, Tracy
found hidden strengths in the distance events. She has a personal best
of 20:02 for a 5k course. Tracy is a graduate of Portsmouth High school
and is majoring in history.

Kirsten Tilney '00- Jackson, N.H.
1999 Captain
In
1998 Kirsten moved into the top seven for the first time of her career.
Established firmly among the top four runners of the team Kirsten set a
new personal record each week as a junior. An elected captain in 1999,
Kirsten's personal best on a 5K course is 20:17.
A sociology major, Kirsten studied in England in spring 1999. A graduate
of the Holderness School, Kirsten is active
in equestrian sports and enjoys alpine skiing.

Jessica Young '00- Thetford, Vt.
1999 Captain, 1997 NCAA's Academic All-NESCAC selection
Jess
is a senior who helped the
team qualify for the NCAA Championship in 1997 by finishing in the fourth scoring position. A consistent performer, Jess is strongest on hilly courses and
in inclement weather. Jess has a personal best of 19:46 on a 5K course.
Over the past two seasons, Jess finished among the top five for Bates in
every race. Jess
lived in the Community Service House her sophomore year and raised a black
labrador puppy as a seeing eye dog on campus for one and one-half years.
A graduate of Thetford Academy, Jess is a double major in Art and Math.
She spent the Spring 1999 semester at the Glasgow
(Scotland) School of Art.

Ellen Humphrey '01 - Lexington, Mass.
1997 NCAA's
Ellen
went from thinking that a 5k race was "long" to qualifying for the NCAA
National Cross Country Championship with the team her first season at Bates.
Primarily a 800-1500m runner Ellen improved steadily in cross country.
Ellen has a personal best of 20:10 on a 5K course, 5:25 in the mile and
2:25 in the 800m. Ellen missed her sophomore year with an injury but came
back to challenge for a top-seven spot in 1999. An Economics major
who teaches SAT Preparatory Classes for the Princeton Review, Ellen will
spend spring semester of 2000 in Sweden.
| Katie Parker '01 -
Williamstown, Mass.
All-New England, All-State, Nordic Skier
Katie
is a
junior who competed in her first cross country season for Bates in 1998.
An accomplished nordic skier,
Katie used the cross country season to prepare for her winter sport.
After just two meets in 1998, Katie established herself as the second
runner on
the Bates squad. Surpassing her high school performances, Katie has a
personal best of 18:47 on a 5K course. Katie finished 7th at the State of
Maine Championship in 1998 to earn All-State Honors, while placing 23rd in
the NCAA
Qualifying Meet to earn All-New England recognition. Katie used her cross
country running success to earn a berth at the NCAA Championships in
Nordic skiing last year.
A graduate of Mt. Greylock High School, Kate majors in English. She has an
identical twin sister (Beth) also at Bates.

Abby Anthony '03 - Jamestown, R.I.
All-State, All-New England
Abby has been one of the biggest surprises of the
first-year class. After finishing second for Bates in the first two
meets, Abby led the team at both the Codfish Bowl and Mt. Holyoke
Invitational. Early in the season she achieved a lifetime best of 19:13
for a 5K course, but she improved her personal best to 18:21 in the New
England Championship meet, earning All-State and All-Region honors. In
high school, Abby was captain of the cross country
and track teams and also competed on the swim team. She earned All-New
England Cross Country Honors in the ISL her last three years. Abby is a
graduate of St. Georges High School and also plays the violin.

Leah Drew '03 - Chigaco, Ill.
Leah Drew had an immediate impact on the Bates Cross
Country Team. In the first meets of the season Leah was consistantly a
top three scorer for Bates. Just four meets into the season Leah
surpassed her best high school performance by 40 seconds setting a new
personal record of 19:35 for a 5K course. By the end of the season, Leah
had broken the 19-minute barrier, running 18:58 at the New England
qualifier. In high school, Leah was the
Runner of the Year in both Track and Cross Country for the Independent
School League. She was All-State in cross country and was awarded the
Willye White Award for her high school. Leah attended the University of
Chicago Lab School where she had times of 11:42 in the 3200m and 5:24 in
the mile. Leah also plays the drums.

Elizabeth Wallace '03 - Winthrop, Mass.
Elizabeth ran cross country and track at Winthrop
(Mass.) H.S. She has run a personal record of 20:44 on a 5k course but is
on pace to surpass that mark in her first collegiate season. Her best
time for the two-mile in track is 12:14. Elizabeth is involved in many
community service projects including PROJECT SAANTA where she raises
money, collects gifts, fills stockings, and delivers hundreds of the
stocking to orphans and underprivileged children in Jamaica and the
Cayman Islands.

Ginger Walsh '03 - Hopkinton, N.H.
Ginger ran cross country for the first time in her athletic career in
1999. In high school she played soccer and was captain of both the alpine
ski and softball teams. The third child in her family to attend Bates,
she was inspired top take up running by her sister Molly '96, an
accomplished marathoner. At Bates Ginger has quickly moved into one of the
top ten positions on the team. She had a season best of 21:19 on a
5k course, moving up significantly over the course of the season. A
graduate of Deerfield Academy, Ginger is studying pre-med.
