The top three finishers for Bates had lifetime bests and helped to keep Bates just ahead of the host Pioneers, 32-33. Several individuals who had scored for the team in earlier meets were rested, but Bates was again led by first year runner Abby Anthony (Kingstown. R.I.) who finished 2nd overall in 19:13. Leah Drew (Chicago, Ill.) was second for Bates and 4th overall with a lifetime best by 25 seconds. Her time was 19:35. Kate Burakowski (Derry, N.H.) was 3rd for Bates in 19:48, breaking the 20 minute barrier for the first time in her career. The team champion was determined in the last few yards as Kirsten Tilney (Jackson, N.H.) and Leigh Johnson (Statesville, N.C.) held off a fast closing Mt. Holyoke runner who threatened the Bates victory. Tilney and Johnson both finished in 21:11 and the Mt.Holyoke runner in 21:12.
