University of Southern Maine Invitational BOBCATS TAKE THIRD AT SEASON'S FIRST SCORING MEET GORHAM, Maine The Bates College women's track and field team placed third of four teams at their first meet of 2002. The Bobcats had two indivudal event winners and one relay winner, but it was an event runner-up who had the team's most significant performance Sophomore Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) placed second in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet, 11 inches. The toss broke her own school record in the event, set last year, by two full feet. The performance earned her a provisional berth in the NCAA Division III championships and was one foot shy of an automatic spot. The Bobcats got individual wins in the 1,500-meter run from junior Kelley Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.) and in the 3,000-meters from sophomore Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.). Their respective times of 4:55.63 and 10:43.36 qualified them for the New England Division III and the ECAC Division III championships. They were also instrumental in Bates' victorious distance-medley relay team, along with rookie Penny Christo (Forestdale, Mass.) and sophomore Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.), with a winning time of 13:32.37. Senior captain Anya Belanger (Milbridge, Maine) took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4-10, also qualifying her for the New England championships. Team Scores: 1. Southern Maine 196.5; 2.
