Bates Invitational BOBCATS PLACE SECOND IN FIRST HOME MEET LEWISTON, Maine The Bates College women's track and field team placed second in their first home meet of the season. The Bobcats scored 180 points, edging in-state foe Bowdoin, who scored 179.5. MIT won the meet with 202.5, while Mount Holyoke finished a distant fourth with 54 points. The Bobcats won three individual events on the day. Bates' top performance came in the 5,000-meter run, in which Bobcat sophomores took the top three spots. Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) won the event in 18:44.60, Elizabeth Pagnotta (Hookset, N.H) placed second in 19:15.30 and Lauren Shoff (Metamora, Ill.) was third in 20:31.50. Sophomore Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) won the shot put for the second week in a row with a heave of 41-8 1/2, while fellow volleyball player Tiffany Tropino (Huntley, Ill.) was third with a toss of 33-3 1/4. First-year sprinter Laura David (Santa Rosa, Cal.) was Bates' final victor, taking the 600-meter dash in 1:43.30. The Bobcats also had two other second-place finishers: sophomore Sarah Tressel (Newton, Pa.) in the high jump (4-10) and senior Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) in the 20-pound weight throw (44-1 1/2).
