Bates Coed Invitational BATES COED INVITATIONAL LEWISTON, Maine The women's track and field team had its first-ever outdoor meet at home on April 6. The Bobcats finished third with 121.5 points, behind Tufts (210) and Colby (200). Bates junior Beth Pagnotta (Scotia, N.Y.) was the Bobcats' lone event winner on the day, setting a facility record in the process. Pagnotta won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:21, more than one minute ahead of teammate Catherine Creswell (Portland, Ore.). Both qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC championships. Sophomore Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) continued her fine campaign by placing second in the shot put with a heave of 41-0.25, breaking her own school record yet again. Wanless was an inch and a half shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Classmate Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) took runner-up honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:51.40, meeting the NCAA provisional standard and ranking her 17th in the nation in the event. Rookie Karissa Carey (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) threw a collegiate best in the hammer, 138-10, good for fourth place, while senior Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) took fifth in the event after winning a lacrosse game as the goalkeeper earlier in the day.
