WANLESS WINS SHOT, ESTABLISHES SCHOOL RECORD

MEDFORD, Mass. -- First-year thrower Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) opened her track and field career with a bang, winning the shot put and placing third in the 20-pound weight throw at the non-scoring Tufts Holiday Classic meet.

Wanless established a school record in the shot with her throw of 40 feet, 11.5 inches. She broke the record set by Erika Bristol '00 at last year's season opening meet by more than four feet, qualifying for the Open New England and New England Division III championships in the process. Wanless took third in the weight throw in her first-ever competitive meet in that event with a heave of 43-1. Classmate Ann Pickard (East Greenwich, R.I.) took fifth in the 20-pound weight with a throw of 38-7. Both first-years qualified for New England Division IIIs in the event.

Two runners also participated in the meet. Sophomore Kelley Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.) took second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:12.74, also qualifying for New Englands. Rookie Julie Dutton (Londonderry, N.H.) placed third in both the 1,500-meters (5:08.94) and the 800 (2:32.01).
