THREE WINNERS FOR BOBCATS AT NORTHEASTERN
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The Bates College womenÕs Track and Field team finished third place at the Rhode Island College Track and Field Invitational in Providence, R.I. The Bobcats finished with a total team score of 72, placing them third out of fourteen teams behind Colby College and Division II Stonehill College.
In addition to the strong team effort, Bates saw a lot of success in individual events, as ten individuals qualified for the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships scheduled for April 28-29 at Wesleyan University. At the meet Bates won two events as Abigail Anthony (Jamestown, R.I.) won the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:30.48, and Kelly Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.) won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:55.23.
Other noteworthy individual performances include; senior Ellen Humphrey (Lexington, Mass.) who finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.41; Aimee Grimmelman who finished third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 7'06"; and Molly Metcalf (Walpole, Mass.) who took third in the javelin throw with a toss of 103'22".
Those who qualified for NESCACs include: Anthony in the 5,000-meter run; first-year Lauren Atkinson(Amherst, N.H.) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles; junior Anya Belanger (Milbridge, Maine) in the high jump and triple jump; sophomore Margaret Herrick (Pine Grove Mills, Pa.) in the 100-meter dash and 200 meter dash; Humphrey in the 800-meter run; sophomore Leigh Johnson (Statesville, N.C.) in the 5,000 meter run; Metcalf in the javelin throw; first-year Elizabeth Pagnotta (Hookset, N.H.) in the javelin throw; Puglisi in the 1,500-meter run; and senior Cameron Wood (Coventry,Conn.) in the hammer throw. In addition to qualifying for NESCAC championships Puglisi and Wood qualified for Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Chamionships. Both of them, as well as Metcalf qualified for the New England Division III Championships in their respective events.
