The Bates women's tennis team got off to a good start against Middlebury, taking two out of three doubles matches. The team of sophomore Jenn Russo (Titusville, N.J.) and first-year Mary Dorman (Holden, Mass.) won, 8-4, at No. 2. Senior captain Laura Shearer (Concord, Mass.) and junior Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J.) were victorious, 8-5, at No. 3.

Middlebury went on to take five of six singles matches. Russo provided the lone Bobcat win at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3.
