Coach John Illig picked up his first-ever women's tennis win over his previous school as the Bobcats (3-2) defeated Colby, 5-4. It was Bates' first win over the White Mules since 1986

After dropping two of three doubles matches, Bates needed to win four of the six singles matches. Sophomore Jenn Russo (Titusville, N.J.) remained undefeated, winning 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, while senior Emily Carleton (Potomac, Md.) breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. First-year Mary Dorman (Holden, Mass.), after teaming with Russo in the doubles win, won a three-set battle at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In the final match of the day, senior captain Laura Shearer (Concord, Mass.) won the first set, 6-2, and bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the second to clich the win with a 6-3 win in the third.
