BATES Dorman+C.Murray defeat Foldes+L.Bacall 8-4The Bates College women's tennis team (4-3), which hadn't played since Oct. 8, had a dramatic comeback to defeat Brandeis University on the road, 5-4. It was the first time in Bates women's tennis history that the Bobcats defeated the Judges. Brandeis chose to play singles first. The Bobcats were playing without No. 2 singles and doubles player Jenn Russo (Titusville, N.J.). Without her most of the team had to be pushed up one spot, and Bates went down 1-4 in the singles with only senior Emily Carleton (Potomac, Md.) remaining at No. 3. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Carleton came back to win in three sets. With the score 2-4, Bates came up strong, sweeping the doubles and completing the comeback. At No. 3 doubles first-year players Mary Dorman (Holden, Mass.) and Catherine Murray (Naperville, Ill.) won 8-4 in their first match together. Junior Janice Michaels (Princeton, N.J.) and senior Laura Shearer (Concord, Mass.) moved up one ladder spot to win No. 2 doubles, 8-5. At No. 1, Carleton, paired with sophomore Suzanne Daly (New York, N.Y.), rallied again. Down 3-6 in the eight-game pro-set, Carleton and Daly won sox of the last seven games for a 9-7 victory.
