Middlebury College, the fifth-ranked team in New England scored three times in five minutes to handle third-rated Bates College, 5-0. Middlebury coach Diane Boettcher, who started the Bates women's soccer program in 1980, picked up her first NESCAC win in another uniform.

Middlebury got the scoring started 11 minutes into the game. The Bobcats had a chance to answer moments off the ensuing tap, but forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) was stopped on a point-blank shot. The Panthers turned the ball back up the field and scored giving them a two goal cushion.

Bates first-year goalkeeper Erika Esch (Joplin, Mo.) made seven saves and kept the Panthers off the board in the second half.
