BATES TOPS BABSON, 2-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn.) had her second multi-goal game of the week as the Bates College Bobcats (4-3) defeated the Babson College Beavers (6-4), 2-0, on Lafayette Street Field.

O'Malley opened the scoring midway through the first period when she took a perfect feed from junior fullback Molly Metcalf (Walpole, Mass.), beat her defender one-on-one and rocketed a shot from just inside the box that beat Babson goalkeeper Katie Mathews (Melvin Village, N.H.) just under the crossbar. O'Malley added her fifth goal of the week just after the second half began. First-year midfielder Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) took a shot from outside the box that hit off the crossbar and deflected right to O'Malley, who headed the ball to Mathews left, just out of reach. O'Malley now has 46 career goals and 111 career points, leaving her three goals and four points behind the Bobcats' career leader, Bethany Maitland '89.

Bates first-year goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) recorded seven saves for her second shutout of the season, while Mathews made 12 saves in the losing effort.

The game was delayed for about a half an hour in the second half, when Bates first-year halfback Dayle Grande (Concord, Mass.) and Babson senior midfielder Kara Pagliaro (Marblehead, Mass.) collided while going for a header. Both were taken off the field in stretchers and taken to Central Maine Medical Center for examination.
