HENRY COMES OFF BENCH TO LEAD AMHERST TO NESCAC SEMIS, 3-1, OVER TUFTS

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year striker Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, Mass.) came of the bench and scored two goals 69 seconds apart in the second half to give the third-seeded Amherst College Lord Jeffs (9-4-1) a 3-1 victory over No. 6 Tufs University (8-7) in the first round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament today.

The Jumbos scored the game's first goal when junior Elizabeth Tooley (Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped a ball past Amherst keeper Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the third minute. Amherst answered two minutes later when rookie Tracy Montigny (E. Granby, Conn.) scored on a rebound of a shot by senior Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, Mass.) that hit the crossbar.

After back-and-forth play could not produce any goals for the remainder of the first half, Henry came off the bench in the 62nd minute to provide the Lord Jeffs' scoring. Montigny fed Henry the ball just two minutes after she entered that Henry rocketed just inside the right post past Tufts' Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, Minn.). The two hooked up again moments later as Montigny sent a ball that gave Henry a one-on-one with Schanfield, which she tallied for the final margin.

Diamond made four saves in the winning effort, while Schanfield had five for the Jumbos. Amherst advances to the semifinals of the NESCAC tournament next Saturday at Williams College. The Lord Jeffs will face No. 2 Middlebury, 2-1 winners over Trinity today, in the semis.
