BATES WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS NO. 1 WILLIAMS, 2-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's soccer team (7-2, 3-2 NESCAC) stunned the top-ranked Williams College Ephs (7-2, 3-2 NESCAC), 2-1, on Leahey Field today.

The Bobcats got on the board in the first half, when rookie reserve DeeDee Shulman (St. Paul, Minn.) took a feed from classmate Kristy Crawford (Derry, N.H.) and buried it with 15 minutes left in the first half. Williams scored the equalizer midway through the second half when leading scorer Stacy Starner (Windham, N.H.) tallied in the 61st minute. The Bobcats responded on a corner kick just four minutes later, when sophomore Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) headed home a ball from junior captain Alicia Dermody (Marbelhead, Mass.).

The Bates defense was strong in front of goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.), who made 10 saves for the win. Williams' Melissa Purdy (Orwell, Vt.) made four saves as the Ephs lost their second straight game since taking over the top spot in the NSCAA national poll. The win was Bates' first over Williams since the 1995 NCAA tournament.
