LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior forward Amanda Waterhouse (Cumberland, Maine) scored a pair of second half goals as the host Bates College Bobcats (11-5) defeated the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers (10-8-2) by a 2-1 score in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England women's soccer playoffs today.

Waterhouse broke the scoreless tie just under eight minutes into the second stanza. She took a pass from rookie back Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) on the right side of the goalie box and deflected it home off the far post. The second-seeded Bobcats doubled the lead in the 66th minute when sophomore Christy Deysher (Wilton, N.H.) sent a through ball to Waterhouse, who beat Plymouth State goalkeeper Becky Kennedy (W. Springfield, Mass.) from 10 yards out. The Panthers cut the lead back to 2-1 just 34 seconds later, taking advantage of a Bates foul in the defensive zone. Senior back Mary Young (Rockland, Mass.) took the free kick and sent it right to the head of PSC leading scorer Carrie Poulin (Westfield, Mass.), who put it over the outstretched arms of Bates keeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.). Poulin almost tied the game four minutes later, after another free kick in the offensive zone, but Martell stopped her point-blank shot.

Bates enjoyed a 28-4 shot advantage for the contest. Martell made two saves to pick up the win, while Kennedy had eight saves in the losing effort.

The Bobcats will host sixth-seeded Williams, 5-0 winners over No. 3 Keene State, in the semfinals at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Bates defeated the Ephs, 2-1, earlier this season when Williams was ranked No. 1 in the nation. Top-seeded Wellesley will host No. 5 Amherst in Saturday's other semifinal. The winners will meet in the finals on Sunday on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
