BATES ESCAPES BABSON WITH 1-0 WIN

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the contest in the 76th minute to give Bates College a 1-0 victory over Babson College in Division III women's soccer action on Thursday afternoon.

Bates (1-0) controlled play throughout the game, firing 35 shots at Babson goalkeeper Kerri Lally (Winthrop, Mass.). However, the Bobcats failed to score until late in the second half, when first-year Rebekah Friedman (Port Washington, N.Y.) found Dockery in front of the net. The junior midfielder then wheeled away from two defenders and took a shot at the lower right corner. Lally came over and got a hand on it, but the ball trickled in off the deflection to give the Bobcats the eventual victory.

Despite taking the loss, Lally turned in a terrific effort in net for Babson, making 16 saves to keep the Beavers (1-4) in the contest. Sophomore goalie Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) made four saves to earn the shutout for Bates.
