BATES TOPS AMHERST IN NESCAC OPENER, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's soccer team used a late goal to claim victory in their home opener, 1-0, over the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs.

In an intense, back-and-forth game, the Bobcats (2-0-0, 1-0-0 NESCAC) scored the lone goal of the contest in the 80th minute. Junior halfback Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) found sophomore halfback Melissa Ostuni (Lynnefield, Mass.) open among in a crowd in front of the net. Ostuni buried her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

Bates goalkeeper Kim Martell (Needham, Mass.) made 13 saves for her second straight shutout, while Amherst keeper Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, Mass.) had nine stops in the losing effort. Amherst entered the game ranked seventh in the most recent NSCAA New England Division III poll, while Bates was unranked. This was the first meeting between the two teams since 1996.
