BATES WOMEN'S LAX RALLIES TO UPSET
NO. 4 WILLIAMS, 12-10, IN OVERTIME

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's lacrosse team scored the last four goals of the contest to defeat the visiting Williams College Ephs, 12-10, in overtime today in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. The Bobcats' win over the No. 4 team in the most recent IWLCA Division III poll was their first since 1995 and the first lacrosse win for 1989 Williams alumna Wynn Hohlt over her alma mater.

Trailing 10-8, Bates closed within one with 4:34 on the clock by turning a Williams turnover into a one-on-goal break by sophomore Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.). Rookie Erica Nason (Concord, N.H.) tied the game just 24 seconds later on an unassisted goal. The Bobcats shut down a pair of Williams opportunities in the final two minutes to force OT.

Bates (4-1, 1-1 NESCAC) scored the eventual game winner just under two minutes into the extra session when Jessup made a nice feed from behind the net to senior co-captain Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.). The same combo hooked up again for an insurance goal just 23 seconds before the teams switch sides in OT. The stingy Bobcats defense did not allow the Ephs many chances in the final three minutes, but senior GK Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) made a pair of key saves.

Williams (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) was behind for much of the first half before exploding for three goals in the final two minutes of the period. Sophomore Victoria Scott (Cambridge, Mass.) assisted rookie Amy Wicker (New Canaan, Conn.) with 1:08 left in the first to give the Ephs their first lead of the game at 5-4. Scott then fed first-year Tara Boyd (New Canaan, Conn.) with 30 seconds left in the stanza to give the Ephs their largest margin of the game, 6-4, at halftime. The two teams traded goals for the majority of the second half before the decisive burst.

Bates' Jessup led all scorers with four goals and six points, while Scott had a game-high three assists for the Ephs. Strahle made 18 saves in net to gain the win, while Williams keeper Abi Jackson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) stopped 15 shots in the losing effort.
