Bates 20, Southern Maine 0
at Lewiston, Maine

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's lacrosse team recorded its first shutout since 1995 today with a 20-0 victory over in-state foes from the University of Southern Maine. The contest, played in a driving snowstorm on Bates' Campus Avenue Field, was called after 48 minutes because of the playing conditions.

Bates (2-1) had four players record hat tricks, led by four goals each from sophomores Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.). Senior co-captain Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) and junior Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) each had three-goal games. Smith also recorded four assists to match her career-high eight points. Coulson had three helpers.

Southern Maine (1-2) goalkeeper Andi Guerrette (Fairfield, Maine) made 11 saves for the Huskies. Bates keepers Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Lindsay Gary (Los Angeles, Cal.) were in the net for Bates' first shutout since a 17-0 decision over Plymouth State College in 1995.

Bates' next contest is at home against Babson at 5 p.m. Thursday, while USM hosts Curry College Friday at 3:30 p.m.
