TUFTS TAKES DEFENSIVE BATTLE FROM BATES, 7-5
MEDFORD, Mass. Tufts sophomore Willow Hagge (Portland, Maine) scored the game-winning goal, and the Jumbo defense held the high-scoring Bates College attack in check in an important 7-5 Tufts win over the Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
Hagge broke a 5-5 tie with a goal assisted by senior tri-captain Liz Horowitz (Westbury, N.Y.) at 9:39 of the second half. Horowitz then added an insurance goal at 1:59. The Tufts defense held a Bates team that was averaging 16.6 goals per game to just five on Saturday. Jumbo junior goalie Ari Kristan (South Windsor, Conn.) made 10 stops for the win. The Jumbos led throughout the first half and took a 4-2 margin into the break. Hagge tallied a goal and an assist, and Bates junior Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) scored the first of her three on the day in the first 30 minutes. Lawler and sophomore Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) then scored 3:30 apart to tie the game at 4-4 with 20:10 remaining in regulation.
Tufts sophomore Kristin Saldarelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) gave Tufts a 5-4 lead with her second goal at 15:41, but Bates replied quickly with Lawler's third at 14:03. Four minutes later, Hagge gave the Jumbos the lead for good with her team-high 21st. Senior Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) made 13 saves for Bates, which also got two assists from sophomore Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.).
