SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS BOWDOIN PAST BATES, 11-8

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Tied at five at intermission, the Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team used a 4-0 run to open the second half in a 11-8 win over rival Bates College today.

Bowdoin's Elsbeth Pratt opened the contest with a goal at 29:31, giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 edge. Bates answered with three straight tallies by sophomores Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) and rookie Katie Carroll (Pennington, N.J.) to take a 3-1 lead midway through the half.

The Polar Bears clawed back into the lead with three straight goals of their own by Kristi Perine, Amanda Burrage and Pratt to take a 4-3 lead at 9:25. The teams traded blows again as sophomore Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) found the back of the net for Bates to tie the score at 6:45 before Libby Bourke scored at 3:58 to regain the lead for Bowdoin.Rookie Erica Nason (Concord, N.H.) tied the contest shortly before the half for Bates as the teams entered the break knotted at 5-5.

The Polar Bears put the game out of reach in the second half, as Perine and Lindsay Powers opened the frame with goals less than a minute apart. Bourke would then score two straight for Bowdoin, at 25:58 and 24:38 as the Polar Bears took a 9-5 lead and cruised to the win. Julia McCombs made nine saves for Bowdoin, while senior Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) made 12 stops for Bates. Bourke led Bowdoin with three goals, while Bates was paced by three goals from Carrie Smith.

The Polar Bears improve to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in NESCAC play, while the Bobcats fall to 7-5 and 3-5, respectively. With the win, Bowdoin clinches a berth in the NESCAC tournament, and will likely take to the road for a first-round contest on Sunday afternoon. Bates falls back into a pack of teams fighting for the seventh and final spot in the tourney, and will face top-ranked Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon.
