NO. 5 WILLIAMS DOWNS BATES WOMEN'S LAX, 18-6

LEWISTON, Maine — The host Bates College women's lacrosse team saw their six-game winning streak snapped today with an 18-6 loss at the hands of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Williams College, the No. 5 team in the nation.

The first half was a tight affair. Williams (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after 12 minutes of play as five different Ephs scored goals, with junior Heather Black (Wayland, Mass.) assisting two of them. Bates (6-1, 2-1 NESCAC) responded by scoring four of the next six goals, pulling to within 7-5 with just over five minutes left in the half on a tally by rookie reserve Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) on a feed from classmate Samara Khalique (W. Hartford, Conn.). Williams rookie Victoria Scott (Cambridge, Mass.) scored with 2:28 on the clock to close out the first half scoring with the Ephs ahead, 8-5. In the second half, Black scored three of the first five goals to open up a 13-5 margin. Bates sophomore Staci Bafford (Severna Park, Md.) stopped the momentum with a free position goal with 11:27 remaining, but the Bobcats did not score again as Williams added five more goals for the 18-6 final.

Bates was led by rookie Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.) who scored two goals. Junior goalkeeper Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made 12 saves in the losing effort. Williams' Black led all scorers with three goals and two assists for five points, while senior Kristen Sullivan (Bridgewater, Vt.) had a game-high four goals. First-year Molly Jennings (Greenwich, Conn.) joined Black with a hat trick. Sophomore Abi Jackson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) had 7 saves for the Ephs.
