BATES WOMEN'S LAX HOLDS OF WESLEYAN, 10-9

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior attack Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) netted all of her game-high three goals in the second half as the Bates College women's lacrosse team extended its longest winning streak since 1992 to six games with a narrow 10-9 win over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Wesleyan University.

Bates (6-0, 2-0 NESCAC) got on the board first on a tally 1:02 into the contest by senior Jenn Sall (Gladwyne, Pa.). Wesleyan (2-3, 0-2 NESCAC) answered with the next three goals, taking their largest lead of the game with 12:27 left in the first stanza on a goal by junior Sarabeth Broder-Fingert (Newton, Mass.). Bates tied the game on a pair of free-position shots before Wesleyan rookie Bernadette Doykos (Rye Beach, N.H.) gave the Cardinals their final lead of the game at 4-3. The Bobcats tied the game, 4-4, on a tally by first-year Carrie Smith (Chevy Chase, Md.) just under four minutes before halftime.

Bates stormed out for the second half, scoring three goals in an eighty second span. Two of those goals were scored by Flynn, who added her third just under 10 minutes into the half to give Bates an 8-5 advantage. Wesleyan cut the lead to 8-7 before Sall gave the Bobcats another two-goal lead with 11:17 left, while rookie Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) pushed the lead to 10-7. Wesleyan scored twice more, including rookie Martina McPherson's (Brookline, Mass.) second goal of the game with 6:06 remaining to cut the lead to 10-9, but the Cardinals could not score the equalizer.

Bates junior goalkeeper Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made 10 saves in her second career start in the net. Sophomore Lynn Model (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had 11 saves for Wesleyan in a losing effort. The win is the second in two meetings for Bates over the Cardinals. Bates' six-game winning streak is the third-longest in school history and marks their second-best start ever behind a 10-0 start in 1992.
