#14 BOWDOIN FENDS OFF #18 BATES, 9-7

LEWISTON, Maine — In a battle of IWLCA top-20 teams, the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears used a three-goal run over an eight-minute stretch midway through the second half to pull away from the host Bates College Bobcats and hang on for a 9-7 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse contest today.

Bowdoin (5-2, 3-2 NESCAC) opened up an early 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest as sophomore attack Linsday Powers (Medway, Mass.) scored one goal and assisted another. Bates broke on the board five minutes into the game on a goal by rookie Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) The teams traded scores before Polar Bear sophomore Libby Bourke (Denver, Colo.) netted her first goal of the contest with 1:45 left in the stanza. Bowdoin looked to take a three-goal cushion into the break before Bates sophomore reserve Staci Bafford (Severna Park, Md.) tallied with 39 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Bobcats (9-3, 3-3 NESCAC) cut the deficit to one with the first goal of the second half when sophomore Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) redirected a pass from behind the net at the 26:11 mark. Bowdoin started the decisive run on a Bourke goal less than four minutes later. The Polar Bears increased the lead to 7-4 four minutes after that and gained their biggest margin and the eventual game-winner on Bourke's third goal of the contest at 14:43. Bates' Crosby looked to regain momentum for the Bobcats with a score with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, but Bourke assisted junior Kristi Perine (Middlebury, Vt.) just 22 seconds later to give Bowdoin some extra breathing room. Bates cut the lead back to two on goals by rookie Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) and Lawler 46 seconds apart, closing to 9-7 with 5:27 left, but the Bobcats were unable to complete the comeback.

Bourke led all players with three goals and an assist, while Perrine added two goals and two assists. Bates got multi-goal games from Crosby and Lawler. Bowdoin junior goalkeeper Julia McCombs (Potomac, Md.) made five saves for the win, while Bates junior Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) had nine saves in the losing effort.
