NO. 17 TRINITY WOMEN'S LAX DOWNS BATES, 17-4
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Trinity College Bantams scored 11 unanswered goals to pull away from the host Bates College Bobcats in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse contest on Lafayette Street Field today.
Trinity (2-4, 1-3 NESCAC), ranked No. 17 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, got the first three goals of the game from first-year attack Laura Davis (Bethesda, Md.). Bates (1-4, 0-2 NESCAC) closed the gap to 3-2 with 5:42 left in the first half on goals by junior Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) and sophomore Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.). The Bantams looked to take a four-goal cushion into the half on tallies by sophomore Anna Sullivan (Woodstock, Vt.) and senior Jess Martin (Alexandria, Va.), the last coming with 27 seconds remaining, but Coulson beat Trinity goalkeeper Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, Mass.) with three seconds left to cut the lead to 6-3 at the break.
Coulson scored again less than four minutes into the second half, but Trinity kept the Bobcats off the board for the rest of the game, while scoring 11 goals of their own. Sullivan led all scorers with five goals, while Martin had three goals and two assists for five points. Coulson's three goals led the Bobcats. Derosier made seven saves in the winning effort while Bates sophomore Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) had 26 saves, one shy of a school record, in the losing effort.
