BATES WOMEN CAPTURE WHEATON TIP-OFF CLASSIC
McCrave, King Named All Tourney

NORTON, Mass. - The Bates College women's basketball team (2-0) got off to a quick start against the host Wheaton College Lyons (1-1) before hanging on for a 55-43 victory.

The Bobcats opened up the game by outscoring Wheaton 19-4 over the first eight minutes. Bates went cold from the field after that, making just three field goals in the final 8:17 of the half, taking a 32-22 lead into the locker room.

Wheaton came out firing in the seocnd half, using a 12-5 run to cut the Bates lead to 37-34 with 10:18 left in the game. The Bobcats answered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, forcing seven Lyon turnovers and regaining a double-figure lead which they held onto for the rest of the game, despite a meager 27.3 shooting performance from the field (20-73).

The Bobcats were led by tournament MVP Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.), who averaged nine steals and eight assists per game, and All-Tournament selection Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) who averaged 18.5 points per game. Junior Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) led the Bobcats in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game.
