SOUTHERN MAINE WOMEN SNAP BATES' WINNING STREAK, 55-52

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LEWISTON - Four starters from the University of Southern Maine women's basketball team scored in double figures as the Huskies overcame a late rally to defeat the Bates College Bobcats, 55-52, snapping the Bobcats' school-record 12 game winning streak.

The Bobcats (12-1) jumped out to a 21-12 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half, but Southern Maine (13-2) ended the half on a 15-4 run to take a 27-25 lead into the locker room. The Huskies started the second half equally strong, using a 17-10 run over the first eight minutes to open up a 44-35 lead, Bates' biggest deficit of the season. Bates stormed back with the next four baskets to start a 15-4 run of their own, taking a 50-48 lead. Southern Maine then scored the seven of the last nine points of the game over the final four minutes to make the 55-52 final. The Huskies had a chance to ice the game when Tracy Libby (Skowhegan) stepped to the line with 25 seconds left. The senior missed both, but Bates was unable to get a shot off to tie the game.

USM placed four players in double figures, led by senior Susan Ware's (Owls Head) double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Libby had 11 points, eight boards and five blocked shots, while senior Destiny Demo (Skowhegan) and sophomore Jessica Hopkins (Hampden) each had 10 points. Bates was led by junior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.), who had a game high 14 points. Southern Maine committed 16 turnovers, but only three in second half. The Bobcats have averaged at least 30 turnovers forced per game.
