QUICK START LIFTS BATES PAST WILLIAMS, 81-71

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's basketball team led from wire to wire, placing four players in double figures, as the Bobcats defeated the visiting Williams College Ephs, 81-71, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action in Alumni Gym today.

Bates (15-7, 5-2 NESCAC) held the visitors to just 17.9 percent shooting in the first half (7-39) as Williams missed 17 of their first 19 shots from the floor. The Bobcats took a 44-25 lead into the locker room behind 12 first-half points from senior forward Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.).

Williams (11-11, 3-5 NESCAC) fell behind by as many as 29 points at 68-39 with 10:47 left on the clock before finding their range. The Ephs hit 44.4 percent in the second half (16-36), cutting the final margin to 10 points.

McLaughlin recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) had 14 points, while junior Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) had 12 points and a game-high five assists. Sophomore center Lisa Golobski (Methuen, Mass.) came off the bench to score 10 points.

Williams was led by sophomore guard Kate Stumpo (Walpole, Mass.), who had a game-high 26 points, hitting a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Senior guard Liz Tilley (New York, N.Y.), the only other Eph player in double figures, added 12 points and four assists.
