QUICK START HELPS BOBCATS PAST UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bobcats of Bates College took a 13-4 lead six minutes into the game and were never seriously threatened on their way to a 67-53 non-conference basketball victory over the University of New England Monday evening at the Campus Center in Biddeford.

Bates (2-2) took advantage of a tentative UNE squad early and pushed its lead to 23-6 with 7:03 remaining before the Nor'easters responded with a 13-6 run to close the gap to 29-19. The Bobcats responded by tallying the final seven points of the half to take a 36-19 advantage into intermission.

Senior Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) held game-high honors with 19 points and 15 rebounds for Bates, which led by at least 10 points the entire second half. McLaughlin's 15 boards marked her best peformance since a 22-rebound performance as a rookie in 1998. Sophomore Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) added a season-high 11 points.

Senior Michele Plant (Gorham, Maine) and first-year Missy Stults (Goshen, Ind.) each scored 14 points for UNE, who fell to 2-2. Stults added a team-best 10 rebounds, while junior Amanda Rodgerson (Newburgh, Maine) chipped in with 12 points and six caroms.
