McLAUGHLIN NETS 1,000TH, BUT BOBCATS FALL TO BOWDOIN

LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College senior forward Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) became the 11th woman in school history to score 1,000 points, but the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears came away with a 68-50 victory in Alumni Gymnasium tonight.

Bowdoin (10-4) led nearly the entire game, except for a brief 8-7 deficit three minutes into the game. The Polar Bears led by as many as eight in the first half, but Bates (9-5) tied the contest at 28-28 with 1:10 on the clock.

Bowdoin then started on a decisive 16-0 run that covered the final minute of the first half and the first four minutes of the second. Junior Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) capped the run with a 3-pointer that gave the Polar Bears a 44-28 lead at the 16:04 mark. Bates got to within 12 points on a free throw by senior Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.) with 7:31 remaining, but another 7-0 run by Bowdoin that featured five points, including a 3-pointer, from sophomore Kristi Royer (Lewiston, Maine) iced the contest. Bowdoin outshot Bates, 43 percent (9-21) to 22 percent (6-27) in the second half to pull away.

McLaughlin, who scored her 1,000th point with 6:02 left in the first half, led all scorers with 16 points, Bates rookie forward Lauren DuBois (Beverly, Mass.) topped all players with eight rebounds.

For Bowdoin, first-year Lora Trenkle (Surry, Maine) led four Polar Bears in double figures with 14 points. Mayol and Royer added 13 points each, while reserve Kristina Fugate (Glenview, Ill.) had 11 and a team-high seven rebounds.
