BATES WOMEN TAKE CARE OF UNE, 70-60

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the opening game of a doubleheader, the Bates College women's basketball team (3-0) defeated the visiting University of New England Nor'Easters (1-3), 70-60.

The Bobcats opened the game on a 18-6 run over the first five and a half minutes with senior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.), junior center Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) and sophomore guard Sarah Williamson (Plainfield, N.J.) each contributing six points. After the Bobcats extended the lead to 31-17 with 4:20 left in the half, UNE called a 30-second time out to regroup and ended the first stanza on a 12-4 run, scoring half of their points from the free throw line. In all, 28 fouls were called in the first half.

In the second half, New England trimmed the lead to six at 41-35 in the first three minutes, but an 18-5 Bates run capped by a hoop from first-year reserve Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.) gave the Bobcats a comfortable 59-40 lead. The Nor'Easters would outscore Bates 20-11 over the final eight minutes, but it was too little, too late.

UNE's Michele Plant (Gorham, Maine) led all scorers with 25 points on seven-of-14 shooting from the floor and nine-of-nine from the line. McLaughlin had 18 points to lead four Bobcats in double figures, while junior forward Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.) had a game-high 17 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive glass. The Bobcats shot 42 percent from the floor, while holding the Nor'easters to 36 percent and forcing 27 turnovers.
