Bates 128, Maine-Machias 42
at Lewiston, Maine

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team kicked off the 1999-2000 campaign by obliterating the school record for points in a game as the Bobcats downed the University of Maine-Machias, 128-42, in Alumni Gymnasium.

The Bobcats placed six players in double figures, led by senior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.), who had 20 points on nine-of-13 shooting from the field. First-year guard Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.) chipped in 18 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the field. Junior Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) had 13 points, while classmate Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.) and first-year forward Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) each chipped in 12. First-year field hockey standout Julia Prica (Mansfield, Mass.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points. King and Dutille each led the team with seven rebounds, with all of Dutille's work coming on the offensive glass. First-year guard Nancy Shapiro (Bloomfield, Conn.) had a game-high 5 assists, while sophomore Sarah Williamson (Plainfield, N.J.) had five steals.

The Bobcats matched the school record for margin of victory with the 86-point win, tying a 22-year old record set in a 107-21 win against St. Francis in 1976. The 126-point output surpassed the 114 points put up against New England College in 1997, while 73 points in the second half was 13 points more than the previous record of 60 set in 1996 against Colby-Sawyer.
