THURSTON NOTCHES 1,000TH CAREER POINT AS BOBCATS TROUNCE TERRIERS

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team posted another impressive win, defeating Thomas College, 75-36, in Alumni Gym tonight, highlighted by the 1,000th career point for women's senior guard Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.)

In the opener, the Bates women (8-1) jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back. For the second time in three games, they allowed an opponent fewer than 15 points in the first half, as the Terriers (1-8) shot just 4-23 (17.4 percent) from the field en route to a 45-13 deficit. With the large lead, the only drama in the second half was whether or not Thurston would score her 1,000th point. Needing 19 points entering the contest, she scored 10 in the first half on five of seven shooting.

Thurston, who averages just over eight points a game but leads the Bobcats in assists, needed 15 shots in the second stanza before scoring her 20th point of the game and reaching the milestone with 1:51 left on the clock before an appreciative home crowd. Thurston becomes the 10th woman at Bates to reach the millennium mark and the fourth under current head coach Jim Murphy. The Bobcats, ranked second in the region in the most recent New England Women's Basketball Association poll, face their toughest foe of the season to date on Thursday when they travel north to face CBB rival Colby.
