Bates College Volleyball

Gordon College Tournament, Sept. 12-13, 1997 - A young Bates team which has just three letterwinners from previous seasons played well against tough competition at Gordon College, but came away without a win on Saturday, dropping inter-regional matches to Rochester and Messiah and falling in straight sets to New England perrenial powerhouse Eastern Connecticut. On Friday night, the Bobcats had a couple of tough five-set matches, falling to Gordon, but topping Wheaton. First-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) was named to the All-tournament team.

Bates Round Robin, Sept. 19-20, 1997 - Marsha Graef's volleyball team (4-6) finished right in the middle of the Bates Round Robin tournament, defeating Rowan University and Colby, and falling to Middlebury and Gordon. First-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) earned her second straght All-Tournament honors. Middlebury went 4-0 to win the title.

Univ. of New England at Bates, Sept. 24, 1997 - Bates (5-6) defeated UNE (1-7). The Bobcats used the opportunity to get all of their active players some playing time. First-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) had another fine performance, picking up 23 assists and making 5 kills in 6 chances. Sophomore co-captain Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) registered a team high 11 kills for the match.

MIT Tournament, Sept. 26-27, 1997 - The Bobcats (6-9) struggled in their second road tournament of the season, dropping three of four matches at MIT. After getting swept by the hosts on Friday night, they lost 3-1 to Gordon College in the third meeting of the season with Scots. On Saturday, Bates dropped three straight to Wheaton, recording the same number of attack errors as kills. In their fourth game of the tournament, the Bobcats finally broke through, defeating Roger Williams. Sophomore hitter Amanda Colby (willimantic, Conn.) had an outstanding match, recording 21 kills in 33 attempts for a .545. percentage. First-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) recorded 42 assists and four service aces in the game.

Bates Invitational, Oct. 3-4, 1997 - The Bobcats dropped their first match of the Bates Invitational to Williams, 6-15, 2-15, 15-12, 15-8, but came back to win their next three matches on Saturday to emerge victorious from the Silver Bracket, made up of the third-place teams from Pool play. They defeated Plymouth State in four games to earn a spot in the Silver Bracket, then swept two matches from CBB rivals Bowdoin and Colby to finish 3-1 and raise their record to 9-10 on the season.

Colby at Bates, Oct. 8, 1997 - The Bobcats (9-11), who had won four of their last five matches overall and five of six at home, got off to a strong start in their only match of the season in Alumni Gym. Against Colby (11-10) they opened an 11-4 lead in the first game. Bates hung on to win it , 15-13, but the Mules rallied to take the final three games, 15-3, 15-6, 15-6. First-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) had 37 assists in the match, sophomore co-captain Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) had 15 kills to lead the team, while classmate Carly Dell'Ova (Derry, N.H.) was tops with 11 digs. The Bobcats had beaten the Mules twice earlier in the season in the Gray Cage.

Eastern Connecticut Tournament, Oct. 10-11, 1997 The Bobcats fell to 9-14 by dropping three matches at Eastern Connecticut against three teams who were all in the top 10 in their respective regions.

Hall of Fame Tournament at Mt. Holyoke, Oct. 24-25, 1997 - Brandeis def. Bates, 15-5, 14-16, 15-7, 15-10.

Maine State Tournament at Colby, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 1997 - The Bobcats entered the Maine State Championships as the number one seed and rolled through their first two matches, defeating Southern Maine and the University of New England in straight sets, before falling to Colby in the championship game. The second place finish is up two spots from a year ago. Sophomore hitter Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) and first-year setter Kate Hagstrom were both named to the All-State and All-Tournament first teams.

NESCAC Tournament, Nov. 7-8, 1997 - Coach Marsha Graef's ended the season on a positive note, winning three of four matches at the NESCAC tournament, winning the fifth place match over Trinity in five games after dropping the first two, 12-15, 6-15. Bates' only loss came to eventual tournament champ Middlebury. Sophomore hitter Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) was named to her second straight All-Tournament team, while first-year setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) was was named first-team All-Conference and Colby was named to the All-NESCAC second team. The Bobcats end the season just under .500 at 19-20.
