The Bobcats got the 1998 season of to a terrific start capturing the Trinity Invitational championship. Bates defeated NYU, Trinity and Wesleyan by 3-0 scores. The Bobcats lost to Rutgers-Newark, 3-1. Bates, Rutgers-Newark and NYU each tied with 3-1 records and 1-1 head-to-head records. The Bobcats earned the title on games won, taking 10 to the other teams' nine games each. It was the Bobcats' first tournament win since 1995. Two Bates players were named to the All-Tournament team, sophomore setter Kates Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) and junior co-captain Carly Dell'Ova (Derry, N.H.).

Statistically, junior co-captain Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) led the team with 42 kills in the four matches (3.23 kpg). Hagstrom, the 1997 NESCAC Rookie of the Year had 107 assists (8.23 apg), while first-year outside hitter Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.) led the way defensively with 22 digs (1.69 dpg).

The Bobcats face the University of Maine-Farmington at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16.
