Junior setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) tied an NCAA record in the third game of the match by serving 15 consectutive points, thanks to the excellent net play of senior Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.). Colby, who had 10 kills in 10 attempts, tied four other players in NCAA Division III history with a 1.000 hitting percentage (10-14 attempts). In the second match of the night, the Bobcats, ranked second in New England fell victim to home-court advantage against another ranked team, No. 6 Amherst, in four games. The loss was Bates' first to a NESCAC opponent this season and just the third to a team from New England. On the second day of action, the Bobcats hoped to equal their win total from a year ago by defeating two more teams ranked in New England. Bates took care of MIT in four games, including a resounding 15-1 victory in the fourth game. The Bobcats used the momentum from outstanding net play from Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) early on in final game of the match to take the win. In the final match of the day, the Bobcats clinched fifth place in the tournament with a four-game win over Williams, Bates' second triumph over the Ephs this season. The Bobcats were boosted by strong left-side play from senior tri-captain Carly Dell'Ova (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.). The Bobcats will have a chance to exceed their win total from last season at the State of Maine championships next weekend in Machias.
