The Bobcats opened the tourney with a hard-fought five-game match against Wheaton College of Massachusetts on Friday night. None of the five sets were decided by more than five points, with Wheaton capturing the first and last games, 17-15, to secure the win. Bates bounced back on Saturday morning to defeat 1998 NCAA-tournament participants MIT in five matches, overcoming a 0-2 deficit to win the final three games, including an 18-16 decision in the fourth game. The Bobcats' momentum was halted in the third match by Wheaton College of Illinois, who won in straight sets, while Bates salvaged a split on the weekend by defeating host Gordon College, 3-0, in the day's final match. Junior setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) was named to the All-Tournament team.
