ECAC DIVISION III NORTH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

LEWISTON, Maine -- Top-seeded Bates College won its second straight ECAC Division III North title, defeating third seed MIT, 3-0, in the title game.

The Bobcats (33-6) won their fourth ECAC title (1989, 1990, 1998, 1999) behind the play of junior setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.), who was named ECAC tournament MVP for the second time in as many years. Hagstrom had 13 kills in 30 attempts, 128 assists, 24 digs and four service aces in the three matches combined. With a raucous Alumni Gym crowd supporting them, Bates won all nine games they played, posting the only three 3-0 wins in the championships.

In the semifinals, the Bobcats (32-6) dispatched NESCAC foe Middlebury College (22-8) for the fourth time this season Bates jumped out to a 12-3 lead in game one of the match, but Middlebury rallied to win seven points in a row, cutting the lead to 12-10. Senior middle hitter Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) stopped the Bates bleeding by winning two points in a row, before junior Kristina Godek (Glastonbury, Conn.) closed out the first game at 15-11. The Bobcats jumped out to big leads in the second and third games, but were able to hold the Panthers off and sweep the match.

In the other semifinal match, No. 2 Springfield (28-9) cruised to victory in the first game of the match, 15-4, but third-seeded MIT gained a split with a 15-8 back-and-forth affair in game three that was tied, 8-8, the Engineers won seven of the final 11 points to gain the upper hand before closing out game four, 15-7, despite nine straight side-outs at game point.

The host Bobcats (31-6), the top seed, were the only team to win all three games of their first round match, defeating the visiting Brandeis University Judges (23-18), 15-12, 15-7, 15-12, despite trailing at some point in each game. Tied at five in the second game of the match, Bates setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) served five consecutive points to give the Bobcats momentum that carried them through the rest of the match.

In other first-round results, fourth-seeded Middlebury College (22-7) defeated New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals Williams in five games, taking the final game 15-12. The Panthers trailed in all three games that they won, including an 8-0 deficit in game three.

Third-seeded MIT (26-9) trailed for most of their first game against #6 Wesleyan University (20-14), but their rally fell short and the Cardinals took opener, 15-11. The Engineers dominated game two, 15-1, and held Wesleyan off in games three and four.

No. 2 Springfield College (28-8) needed five games to take out New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wheaton College. After splitting the first two games, Wheaton took an 8-0 lead in the third, but the Pride rallied for the 15-12 win. After the Lyons tied the match by winning the fourth game, Springfield closed out the match by taking a 9-4 lead in game five and holding on for the 15-8 win.
