VOLLEYBALL DROPS USM, 3-0

GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore Liz Wanless (Bellville, Ill.) and rookie Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass.) combined for 25 kills to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference volleyball match Wednesday night at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium.

Bates (6-3) ran out to an 11-0 lead in the first game behind the serving of senior Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.) before the Huskies regrouped. The final two games were nip and tuck throughout. The Bobcats won the three games by scores of 30-17, 30-26 and 30-24.

Wanless finished the match with 14 kills while Zurek had 11 kills. Fennessey ended the night with 11 service aces. Leading the Huskies (3-3) was senior Marcy Muller (Farmington, Maine) who had seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore Caitlin Leonard (Peabody, Mass.) added five kills and three blocks, and senior Meaghan Lumbis (Leverett, Mass.) chipped in six kills, five aces, and nine digs.
