VOLLEYBALL OPENS 1-2 AT GORDON INVITATIONAL

WENHAM, Mass - The Bates College volleyball team split a pair of five-game matches today en route to a 1-2 record at the season-opening Gordon Invitational. The Bobcats topped the host Fighting Scots, 3-2, while dropping a 3-2 decision to Wheaton College. MIT swept Bates, 3-0, in the Bobcats' opening match.

Sophomore outside hitter Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament team. The 2000 NESCAC Rookie of the Year led the way offensively for the Bobcats, recording 69 kills over the three matches, including 27 in the win over Gordon, 26 against Wheaton and 16 against MIT. Rookie OH Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass.) added 18 kills in the second match and 14 against Wheaton. Senior co-captain Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.), the 2000 NESCAC Defensive player of the year, recorded 33 digs and five aces against Wheaton. She also added 18 digs against Gordon.
