The Bobcats opened play against the hosts on Friday night and dropped a close match in which only one game was decided by more that five points. After losing the opening game of the match, 18-16, Bates rallied to win the next two, 15-13 and 15-7. Gordon used the home court to their advantage in the last two games to hang on for the win. The Bobcats bounced back to record Bowman's first win at Bates with a sweep of MIT, and claimed second place with a four-game win over Wheaton, one of just four teams to defeat the Bobcats last season. The Wheaton win was capped by a remarkable comeback in the fourth game. The Bobcats trailed the Lyons, 9-0, before junior captain Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.) served six straight points to get Bates back in the game, which they won, 15-11. The Bobcats placed senior setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) and first-year outside hitter Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) on the all-tournament team. Bates is next in action Wednesday, when they play host to Maine-Farmington.
