BATES TAKES COLBY IN FIVE, FINISHES 3-1 IN NESCAC QUAD

WATERVILLE, Maine- The Bates College volleyball team (15-4, 3-1 NESCAC) was extended to five games before emerging victorious against the host Colby College White Mules (11-10, 1-3) in the second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Quad Meet of the season.P<> Bates came ready to play as they won the first game, 15-3. Colby found their rhythm in the second game and came back with a 15-3 win.

The White Mules jumped out to an early lead in the third game and never looked back as they won 15-9. The next two games were very close as both teams rallied to stay ahead of one another.

Controversy loomed on the court in the fourth game when a ball called in was overturned in Colby's favor, giving the White Mules the point. Play continued and the Bobcats bounced back to win the game 15-12.

The fifth game, played under rally scoring, was even until the end. Colby and Bates battled back and forth, tying at least five times. The Bobcats prevailed in the end, wining the game 15-12, and winning the match 3-2.

The Bobcats were led by rookie Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.) who recorded 25 kills, 12 digs, and two aces. Junior Lauren Fennessey (02, Joplin, Mo.) added 18 kills, nine digs, and two aces. Senior Amanda Webb (East Greenbush, N.Y.) contributed 10 kills, six digs, and two aces.

The White Mules' were led by junior Amanda Cuiffo's (Waban, Ma) 32 blocks, 27 digs, 17 kills, and five aces. Colby's Laurel Burham (03, Bailey's Harbor, Wi) added 42 assists in five games of work. Senior Reagan Carey (Prospect, Ky) helped the team with 15 blocks, 13 kills, and two digs.
